Here voices/samples found or hidden in miscellaneous Sonic games

Sonic 1 and 2 voices :

- s1s2sounds.zip : zip package containing audio samples (not all of them) used in Sonic 1 and 2 for the restitution of DAC sound during musics. They have been ripped with help of Winamp and the YMAmp plug-in. Useful for MODtrackers (poeple who do sound-tracking with, for example, the Fast Tracker 2 software), Mega Drive music re-creators or even SoundFonts makers.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles voices :

- s3sounds.zip : zip package containing audio samples (not all of them) used in Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 3 & Knuckles for the restitution of DAC sound during musics. They have been ripped with help of Winamp and the YMAmp plug-in. Useful for MODtrackers (poeple who do sound-tracking with, for example, the Fast Tracker 2 software), Mega Drive music re-creators or even SoundFonts makers.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles collection for PC musics :

- fms3k_midis.zip : zip package featuring the "FM" versions of all the musics from the Sonic 3 & Knuckles Collection PC game. All of them are in MIDI format and have been directly recorded from the MIDI Output (using that Hubi's LoopBack program I think) by MaliceX (Ripper : MaliceX).

- gmsonic3.zip : zip package featuring the "General MIDI" versions of all the musics from the Sonic 3 & Knuckles Collection PC game. As for the FM ones, they're in MIDI format and have been directly recorded from the MIDI Output (using that Hubi's LoopBack program I think) by MaliceX. They sound a bit different (better or worse, depending your tastes) from the FM ones (Ripper : MaliceX).

Sonic Crackers voices :

By opening the ROM into a sound editor (by using the Dialogix 4-bit ADPCM format), we can hear this : crackers.wav. Hmm, "It's not bad !" this voice seems to say. The bad quality of sound is due to the compression used (close from Dialogix ADPCM) to store it into the ROM (and also because that Dialogix ADPCM format used to decode it in this wave file is not the correct one... it seems to use another ADPCM compression but which one ?...). By the way, nearly all Mega Drive games use that mysterious compression (and also some System 16 games like Shinobi or Alex Kidd).

Sonic CD voices :

They can be found in Sncbnk**.bin files. They feature instruments played during musics of levels that take place in the past. They're originally encoded in 8-bit PCM but sign format is bizarre... (negative part of sound seems to be turned in the wrong way) which make these sounds unhearable correctly. Nevertheless, after a little hacking into Cool Edit 96, we come with quite hearable sounds. Here are wave versions of them :

  • sncbnk1b.wav : this file contains instruments of Palmtree Panic in the past plus Sonic voices and an Amy laugh.
  • sncbnk3b.wav : this file contains instruments of Collision Choas in the past.
  • sncbnk4b.wav : this file contains instruments of Tidal Tempest in the past.
  • sncbnk5b.wav : this file contains instruments of Quartz Quadrant in the past.
  • sncbnk6b.wav : this file contains instruments of Wacky Workbench in the past.
  • sncbnk7b.wav : this file contains instruments of Stardust Speedway in the past.
  • sncbnk8b.wav : this file contains instruments of Matallic Madness in the past.
  • sncbnkb1.wav : this file contains a little hip-hop beat but I don't remember what it belongs to ! (Ah yes ! It comes from boss music, thanks, Tom41 and your site ;))
  • sncbnkb2.wav : this file contains instruments of final boss music.

Note : all thes files (before been hacked), I downloaded them from Tom's hacking station (now down...) which is Tom41's website (because I don't have final Sonic CD yet). He'll be glad to find these "special" files in an optimal sound quality ;).

Cinematics from Sonic CD :

This is big news here because I offer now cinematic sequences in this section :

- sonic_cd_intro_camcodec_version.avi : nothing less than the introduction sequence of the game, in full quality and in AVI. Note that I used a loss-less codec to encode this video, which fits better to simple animated sequences like this one. I'm speaking about the CamCodec codec, that can be bundled with the Windows desktop video recording utility called Camstudio. You can download this codec here. If you do not install this codec, you'll not be able to see the video :P.

SegaSonic/SonicArcade voices :

Here again, sounds were encoded in that same format as above. A little hacking into Cool Edit 96 and we get this :

  • sonsnd1.wav : contains instruments used during music restitution.
  • sonsnd2.wav : contains sound effects used during the game.
  • sonsnd3.wav : contains voices of the different protagonists (Sonic, Mighty, Ray and Eggman) in japanese !

Sonic Advance voices :

These are instruments used in the game, some sound effects and a chao voice : sadsounds.wav

Sonic Advance 2 voices :

These are instruments used in the game (old audio samples from Sonic Advance plus new 'electronic'-style samples and 'house'-stylsih rythmic loops), a few sound effects and still the chao voice, saying the same weird things like 'ohimok'p pop' or similar : sa2sounds.wav

Sonic Advance 3 voices :

These are instruments used in the game (old samples from Sonic Advance 1, 2 and Sonic Battle) with, this time, voices of all in-game characters, more SFX and misc sounds (even some sampled higher than 10496 Hz) but... the chao voice is no more : sa3sounds.wav

Sonic Pinball Party voices :

These are instruments used in the game (old samples from Sonic Advance 1 and 2) with some pinball SFX, nice tones and an 'off' voice : sonic_pinball_sounds.wav

Sonic Battle voices :

These are instruments used in the game (old samples from Sonic Advance 1 and 2 plus rythmic loops and guitar riffs), voices of all in-game characters in English and Japanese, various SFX (laser beams, explosions...) and hit noises : sonic_battle_sounds.wav

Sonic Adventure voices :

Attention, new ! These are hidden voices of  Tikal buried into the Sonic Adventure Dreamcast game ISO. They are originally in ADX format (a specific format to the Saturn and Dreamcast - so, I converted them in Wave in order for you to be able to listen to them easily) and have been ripped by Mangoman (see the forum Sonic 2 Beta, the topic talking about these voices is still in) thanks to a very special equipment : a "coder's cable" to link the DC to the PC and a DC development kit to unlock the protection and have acces to all the files contained in the game. Well, spoken enough, here are the voices :

  • event adx us 1672_adx.wav : a message (it's apparently an advice to beat a boss) saying "When Gola is breathing fire, it's your chance to attack !"
  • event adx us 1674_adx.wav : another Tikal advice to beat a boss, "Be careful of Leon, he appears suddenly."
  • event adx us 1676_adx.wav : finally, the last one, my favourite because they are probably advices from Tikal for Sonic when he must transform into Super Sonic : "Gather 50 rings and press the Action button while you jump. You'll transform into Super Sonic !! But, watch out for your ring consumption."

Note : these voices have been pulled out from the game because bosses which Tikal references to have not been included in the game (grrr, I'm so stupid, thanks Igrekkess for your pertinent remark on the French forum ;)).

Erm, Mighty (from the French Sonic-Online forum) has a remark to do about this topic : "it may seem that Sonic could originally transform into Super Sonic out of the final fight, or when he began this fight, Sonic had to collect 50 rings before transforming into Super Sonic and fight Perfect Chaos. You could put that theory on your site, Dioxaz". Actually, why not ? Infact, I've never played SA1 in my life (yes, shame on me, isn't it ?...) I'll have to play SA1 to confirm that. By the way, thanks for your remark ;).

Voilà, that's all for the moment !
